Crochet Bay Ridge Fingerless Mittens Easy Free Pattern

Materials

  • Size H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
  • Medium worsted-weight yarn (size 4); I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in various colors
  • Tapestry needle

Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • hk – hook
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • BLO – back loop only
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sk – skip

Special Stitch

Half Double Crochet in the Third Loop Only: Each hdc has a third horizontal loop located behind the two top loops. Insert your hook into this third loop and complete the hdc as usual.

Pattern Notes

  • The beginning ch 1 and ch 2 do not count as stitches.
  • Join each round with a sl st to the first stitch of the round.
  • Do not turn after joining the rounds.
  • The ch-4 thumb opening counts as 4 stitches.
  • Make one right-hand glove and one left-hand glove.

Cuff

Ch 10.

Row 1: Sc in the second ch from the hk and in each ch across. Turn. (9 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in the BLO of each st across. Turn. (9 sts)

Rows 3–18: Repeat Row 2. (9 sts)

You should have a total of 18 rows.

Ch 1. Fold the cuff in half so the first and last rows are together. Sl st through the sts of the last row and the corresponding loops of the foundation ch to join the short ends of the cuff together.

Do not fasten off. Turn the cuff so the seam is on the inside.

Body

You will now work around the top edge of the cuff.

Setup Round: Working evenly around the edge of the cuff, sc 26 sts around. The sts will be worked closely together. Sl st to the first sc to join. (26 sts)

Round 1: Ch 2, hdc in each st around. Sl st to the first hdc to join. (26 sts)

Rounds 2–6: Ch 2, hdc in the third loop only of each st around. Sl st to the first hdc to join. (26 sts)

Continue with the instructions for either the right-hand or left-hand glove.

Right-Hand Glove

Round 7: Ch 2, hdc in the third loop only of the next 12 sts, ch 4, sk the next 4 sts, hdc in the third loop only of the remaining 10 sts. Sl st to the first hdc to join. (26 sts)

Round 8: Ch 2, hdc in the third loop only of the next 12 sts, hdc in each of the 4 chs, hdc in the third loop only of the remaining 10 sts. Sl st to the first hdc to join. (26 sts)

Round 9: Ch 2, hdc in the third loop only of each st around. Sl st to the first hdc to join. (26 sts)

Round 10: Ch 2, hdc in the third loop only of each st around. Sl st to the first hdc to join. (26 sts)

Round 11: Ch 2, hdc in the third loop only of each st around. Sl st to the first hdc to join. (26 sts)

Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

Left-Hand Glove

Repeat the Cuff and Body instructions through Round 6, then continue below.

Round 7: Ch 2, hdc in the third loop only of the next 10 sts, ch 4, sk the next 4 sts, hdc in the third loop only of the remaining 12 sts. Sl st to the first hdc to join. (26 sts)

Round 8: Ch 2, hdc in the third loop only of the next 10 sts, hdc in each of the 4 chs, hdc in the third loop only of the remaining 12 sts. Sl st to the first hdc to join. (26 sts)

Round 9: Ch 2, hdc in the third loop only of each st around. Sl st to the first hdc to join. (26 sts)

Round 10: Ch 2, hdc in the third loop only of each st around. Sl st to the first hdc to join. (26 sts)

Round 11: Ch 2, hdc in the third loop only of each st around. Sl st to the first hdc to join. (26 sts)

Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.
