The Bay Ridge Crochet Textured Family Beanie is a cozy, easy-to-make hat pattern designed for the whole family!
Featuring simple double crochet increases and a beautifully textured half double crochet stitch worked in the third loop, this beanie has a modern ridged look while still being beginner-friendly.
The pattern includes five sizes, from baby through adult, so you can make matching hats for everyone.
It uses medium weight (size 4) yarn and a 5.00 mm crochet hook, making it a great everyday project for fall and winter.
The third-loop technique creates the raised horizontal ridges that give the Bay Ridge Beanie its signature texture without requiring complicated stitches.
The length is also easy to customize—simply add or remove textured rounds to create a shorter fitted beanie or a longer, slightly slouchy style.
Choose one cozy color for a classic look, or make each family member their own favorite shade!
Whether you’re crocheting for your own family, making handmade gifts, or preparing hats for a fall craft show, the Bay Ridge Beanie is a simple and versatile pattern you’ll want to make again and again.

Materials:
- Medium weight (size 4) yarn
- Size H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
Yarn Estimate:
- Baby 0–6 mo: approximately 85–100 yards
- Baby 6–12 mo: approximately 100–120 yards
- Toddler 1–3 yr: approximately 120–145 yards
- Child: approximately 150–180 yards
- Adult 13+ yr: approximately 190–225 yards
Yardage is based on making the hat in one color. The amount needed may vary depending on yarn brand, tension, and adjustments made to the height of the hat.
Abbreviations:
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
- st(s) – stitch(es)
Note:
The height of the hat can easily be adjusted. For a shorter hat, work fewer third-loop hdc rounds. For a longer or slouchier hat, repeat the third-loop hdc round until the desired length is reached.
Special Stitches:
- Third loop only – After working a round of hdc, turn the top of the stitches slightly toward you. Each hdc has a third horizontal loop located behind the two top loops of the stitch. Insert your hook into this third loop and complete the hdc as usual. Working in the third loop pushes the two top loops forward, creating a raised, textured ridge around the hat.
Gauge:
14 dc x 7 rows = 4″
