Materials
- Size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook
- Medium weight (size 4) yarn, 2 strands held together throughout
- Tapestry needle
- Optional: Google eyes and hot glue gun
Abbreviations
- ch – chain
- hk – hook
- sc – single crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
- st(s) – stitch(es)
Measurements:
Measures 10″ across at widest wingspan and 6.5″ tall
Wings (Make 2)
Using 2 strands of yarn held together and a size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook.
Ch 15.
Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hk and in each ch across, turn. (14 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in the first 12 sts. Leave the remaining 2 sts unworked, turn. (12 sc)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (12 sc)
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in the first 10 sts. Leave the remaining 2 sts unworked, turn. (10 sc)
Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (10 sc)
Row 6: Ch 1, sc in the first 8 sts. Leave the remaining 2 sts unworked, turn. (8 sc)
Row 7: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (8 sc)
Row 8: Ch 1, sc in the first 6 sts. Leave the remaining 2 sts unworked, turn. (6 sc)
Row 9: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (6 sc)
Row 10: Ch 1, sc in the first 4 sts. Leave the remaining 2 sts unworked, turn. (4 sc)
Row 11: Ch 1, sc in each st across. (4 sc)
Do not fasten off. Sc across the straight side of the wing and fasten off. Weave in ends.
Body
Ch 5.
Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hk and in each ch across, turn. (4)
Rows 2-16: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (4)
Row 17: Do not ch. Sl st in the first st, ch 3, sl st in the first ch to form a small point. Sl st in the next 2 sts, ch 3, sl st in the first ch to form a second point, then sl st in the last st.
Continue working sc evenly around the outside edges of the body and up the opposite side.
Sl st in the corner and fasten off.
Weave in ends.
Construction
Fold the body so the two short, straight ends meet.
Using a tapestry needle and yarn, sew the short ends together as shown.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Center the body over the wings.
Using a tapestry needle and yarn, sew the body securely to the center of the wings.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Hanging Loop
Join yarn to a st on the back center of the wings.
Ch 8, then sl st into the same st where you joined the yarn to form a loop.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
The hanging loop is intentionally placed on the back of the bat so it stays hidden when the bat is hanging.
Eyes (optional)
Glue on googly eyes with hot glue gun.
