St. Paddy’s crochet rainbow top hat

Create this fun festive St, Paddy’s crochet rainbow top hat for this St. Patrick’s Day! Full of vibrant color and fun to make!

Written in baby-adult sizes:

0-3 M Size (14-15″ head circumference)
3-6 M size (15-16″ head circumference)
6-9 M size (16-17″ head circumference)
9-12 M (17-18″ head circumference)
Toddler size (18-19″ head circumference)
Child Size (19-20″ head circumference)
Adult size (20-21″ head circumference)

Don’t forget the pot of gold! Make it a set with my rainbow pot of gold pattern!

Materials:

– H hook, 5.00 mm hook

– Medium worsted weight (size 4) yarn or 100% cotton yarn (I used Red Heart Super Saver in Spring Green and Lily N’ Cream 100% cotton yarn in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple). I used both fibers and it turned out very cute. You can use one or the other or both.

– Blunt needle

Abbreviations:

st(s)- stitch(es)

ch- chain

sc- single crochet

dc- double crochet

sl st- slip stitch

BLO- back loop only

0-3 M Size (14-15″ head circumference):

With green yarn make a magic circle

Ch 2, dc 10 into the center ring, sl st to join (10).

Row 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around (20).

Row 3: Ch 2, 2 dc in same ch 2 space, *dc in next st, 2 dc,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (30).

Row 4: Ch 2, 2 dc in same ch 2 space, *dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (40).

Row 5: Ch 2, dc in the BLO around (40).

Row 6: 6: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (40).

Rows 7-11: Ch 1, sc in each st around starting with a row of red, then a row of orange, then a row of yellow, then a row of green, then a row of blue, then a row of purple. Sl st to join at the end of each row. (40).

Do not fasten off.

Brim (work in the round):

Row 12: Switch back to green. 2 sc in first st, *sc next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat from * around.

Row 13: Sc in each st around.

Row 14: 2 sc in first st, *sc next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat from * around.

Row 15-18: Sc in each st around. Fasten off on last st of last row and weave in end.

 

3-6 M size (15-16″ head circumference):

With green yarn make a magic circle

Ch 2, dc 9 into the center ring, sl st to join (9).

Row 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around (18).

Row 3: Ch 2, 2 dc in same ch 2 space, *dc in next st, 2 dc,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (27).

Row 4: Ch 2, 2 dc in same ch 2 space, *dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (36).

Row 5: Ch 2, 2 in same ch 2 space, *dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (45).

Row 6: Ch 2, dc in the BLO around (45).

Row 7: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (45).

Rows 8-12: Ch 1, sc in each st around starting with a row of red, then a row of orange, then a row of yellow, then a row of green, then a row of blue, then a row of purple. Sl st to join at the end of each row. (45).

Do not fasten off.

Brim (work in the round):

Row 13: Switch back to green. 2 sc in first st, *sc next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat from * around.

Row 14: Sc in each st around.

Row 15: 2 sc in first st, *sc next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat from * around.

Row 16-19: Sc in each st around. Fasten off on last st of last row and weave in end.

6-9 M size (16-17″ head circumference):

With green yarn make a magic circle

Ch 2, dc 10 into the center ring, sl st to join (10).

Row 1: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around (20).

Row 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in same ch 2 space, *dc in next st, 2 dc,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (30).

Row 3: Ch 2, 2 dc in same ch 2 space, *dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (40).

Row 4: Ch 2, 2 in same ch 2 space, *dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (50).

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in the BLO in each st around, sl st to join (50).

Rows 6-8:  Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (50).

Rows 9-13: Ch 1, sc in each st around starting with a row of red, then a row of orange, then a row of yellow, then a row of green, then a row of blue, then a row of purple. Sl st to join at the end of each row. (50).

Do not fasten off.

Brim (work in the round):

Row 14: Switch back to green. 2 sc in first st, *sc next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat from * around.

Row 15: Sc in each st around.

Row 16: 2 sc in first st, *sc next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat from * around.

Row 17-20: Sc in each st around. Fasten off on last st of last row and weave in end.

9-12 M (17-18″ head circumference):

Row 5: Ch 2, 2 in same ch 2 space, *dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (45).

Row 6: Ch 2, dc in same ch 2 space, *dc next 4 sts, 2 dc,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (54).

Row 7: Ch 2, dc in the BLO around (54).

Rows 8-9: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (54).

Rows 10-14: Ch 1, sc in each st around starting with a row of red, then a row of orange, then a row of yellow, then a row of green, then a row of blue, then a row of purple. Sl st to join at the end of each row. (54).

    I really want to make this pattern .. can you adjust it to fit a 23″ circumference head?

      Yes, just add another increasing row before you work in the back loops only.
