Crochet Christmas Sweet Stitch Hat

Materials:
– Size H, 5.00 mm crochet hook
– Medium weight (size 4) in green, white and red. I used Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Yarn” in “Limelight”, “Fire Red” and “White”.
– Tapestry needle
– Optional: faux fur pom and 1″ button
Abbreviations:
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
st(s) – stitch(es)
BLO – back loops only
sl st – slip stitch
puff – puff stitch (see Special Stitches)
sk – skip
bpsc – back post single crochet
hdc2tog – half double crochet two together
Gauge:
14 hdc’s and 10 rows = 4″ square
Sizing:
Special Stitches:
Puff Stitch:
Yarn over (yo) and insert your hook into the stitch or space.
Yarn over again and pull up a loop (you now have 3 loops on your hook).
Yarn over, insert the hook into the same stitch, pull up another loop (you now have 5 loops).
Yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook.
Chain 1 to close the puff
Brim Instructions (green yarn):
Start by chaining the number of stitches based on the desired size:
- Adult – Chain 11
- Child – Chain 9
- Toddler – Chain 9
- Baby – Chain 8
For all sizes (green yarn):
Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hk and each ch across.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in the back loop only (BLO) of each st across.
Repeat Row 2 until your band reaches the following row count:
- Adult – 60 rows
- Child – 54 rows
- Toddler – 48 rows
- Baby – 42 rows
Fold brim in half. Sl sl the back loop on one side and the front loop of the other side together in each st across.
Body (green yarn):
Single crochet evenly around the brim to match the stitch count for your selected size:
- Adult/Teen – 60 sts
- Child – 54 sts
- Toddler – 48 sts
- Baby – 42 sts
All sizes: Ch 1, slip stitch to join.
Switch to white yarn, ch 2.
Round 1: Sk first st, *dc in next, puff st in skipped st, sk next st,* repeat from * around, sl st to join.
Round 2: Switch to red yarn, ch 2, 2 dc in each ch 1 space from previous row, sl st to join.
Rounds 3-4: Switch to green yarn, ch 1, bpsc in each st around, sl st to join.
Repeat rounds for corresponding size:
Baby-
Repeat rounds 1-4.
Continue with “decreasing” section.
Toddler-
Repeat rounds 1-4.
Continue with “decreasing” section.
Child-
Repeat rounds 1-4, 2 more times.
Continue with “decreasing” section.
Adult-
Repeat rows 1-4, 2 more times.
Continue with “decreasing” section.
Decreasing:
Ch 2, *hdc2tog, hdc next 2 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join.
Next round: Ch 2, hdc2tog around, sl st to join.
Baby-child sizes continue with “finishing” section.
Adult size only: Ch 2, hdc2tog around, sl st to join.
Finishing:
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Using a tapestry needle, weave through the front loop only of each stitch around the crown. Pull tight to close the top.
Sew securely on the inside of the hat for reinforcement.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Optional: Attach faux fur pom/leather tag.
