Special Stitches: Third Loop Only
Working into the third loop only in crochet creates a unique texture, often pushing the top two loops forward and giving a knit-like appearance. This technique is commonly used with half double crochet (hdc) stitches but can also apply to other stitches.
How to Work in the Third Loop Only
- Identify the Third Loop
- Normally, when crocheting, you insert your hook under both the front loop and back loop of a stitch.
- The third loop is found behind the back loop when working half double crochet (hdc) stitches.
- Where to Insert Your Hook
- Turn your work slightly so you can see the back of the stitches.
- Locate the third loop, which sits just below the back loop.
- Insert your hook under this third loop only, leaving the front and back loops unworked.
- Work Your Stitch
- Once your hook is inserted into the third loop, complete your stitch as usual.
Tips for Working in the Third Loop Only
- Right Side vs. Wrong Side:
- When working in rows, the third loop is usually facing you on the wrong side of the work.
- Best Used for Textured Projects:
- This technique is great for hats, ribbed edges, and cowls, as it pushes the standard loops forward, creating a raised “knit-like” effect.
Pattern:
CH 108
Row 1: Hdc in the 3rd ch and each ch across, turn (106).
Row 2: Ch 2, *sk first st, hdc in next, go back and hdc in skipped st,* repeat from * to end, turn (106).
Row 3: Ch 2, hdc in the third loop only in each st across, turn (106).
Rows 4-15: Repeat rows 2 and 3.
Do not fasten off.
Lay your piece down wrong side up and fold down 1/3 of your work.
Fold over the other side so they overlap and make a “V” at the front.
Continue to sc evenly around the entire piece (go through both sides where they overlap).
Sl st in first st and fasten off.
Weave in ends.
Fringe:
Cut fringe strands 14”.
Take 3 strands together and fold in half.
Insert your hook in a st and pull the half through, yarn over and pull all strands through.
Repeat every 3 sts along the front “V” of the cowl, going up the sides.
Trim to 4” or desired length.
