Crochet Polar Bear Hat 3 Sizes Easy Free Pattern

Crochet Polar Bear Hat

Materials:

– Size H, 5.00 mm crochet hook

– Medium weight (size 4) yarn in white, fuzzy white yarn and a small amount of black yarn.

– Tapestry needle

– Small amount of stuffing

Abbreviations:

ch- chain

st(s)- stitch(es)

sc- single crochet 

dc- double crochet

sl st- slip stitch

sc2tog- single crochet two together

Gauge:

12 sts x 7 rows = 4″ square

Note:

– The width is measured at the crown

Hat:

Baby Size (5″ wide x 6.5″ tall):

Make a magic circle and ch 2

Round 1: 10 dc in circle, pull to close, sl st to join (10).

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, sl st to join (20).

Round 3: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (30).

Round 4: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 2 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (40).

Rounds 6-11: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (40).

Fasten off, weave in end.

Continue with “side earflaps” section.

Toddler/Child Size- (6″ wide x 7.5″ tall):

Make a magic circle and ch 2

Round 1: 10 dc in circle, pull to close, sl st to join (10).

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, sl st to join (20).

Round 3: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (30).

Round 4: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 2 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (40).

Round 5: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 3 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (50).

Round 6-13: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (50).

Fasten off, weave in end.

Continue with “side earflaps” section.

Teen/Adult Size- (7″ wide x 8.5″ long):

Make a magic circle and ch 2

Round 1: 10 dc in circle, pull to close, sl st to join (10).

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, sl st to join (20).

Round 3: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (30).

Round 4: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 2 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (40).

Round 5: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 3 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (50).

Round 6: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 4 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (60).

Round 7-14: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (60).

Fasten off, weave in end.

Continue with “side earflaps” section.

Side Earflaps:

Right flap:

Row 1: Sc next 10 sts, turn (10)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc 6, sc2tog, turn (8).

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn (8).

Row 4: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc 4, sc2tog, turn (6).

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn (6).

Row 6: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc 2, sc2tog, turn (4).

Row 7: Ch 1, sc in each st across (4).

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Left flap:

Lay the hat on it’s side with the left ear side facing you. 

Line up the side with the earflap you just made with slightly more stitches in the front than in the back.

Pick up a st on the right end where it matches up (counts as a sc).

Continue with the “earflap” directions above.

Ears and mouth (make 3 with white yarn):

Make a magic circle, ch 2

Round 1: 12 dc in circle, pull to close, sl st to join (12).

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, sl st to join (24).

Mouth:

Cut 2 long strands of black yarn. With 2 strands held together use your tapestry needle to sew the nose on the mouth in a triangle shape.

Fasten off on the wrong side, weave in ends.

With a long strand of black yarn sew the mouth on below the nose.

Follow the line between the rows as a guide.

Fasten off on the wrong side, weave in ends.

Attach the mouth onto the hat just above the second round from the bottom of the hat.

Weave in and out around the entire mouth, adding a little stuffing as you go.

Fasten off on the inside of the hat and weave in ends.

Sew ears onto hat.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Eyes (make 2 with white yarn):

Make a magic circle and ch 2

Round 1: 12 dc in circle, pull to close, sl st to join.

Fasten off leaving a long tail.

Pupils (make 2 with black yarn):

Make a magic circle, ch 1

Round 1: 6 sc in circle, pull to close, sl st to join (6).

Sew pupils onto the middle of the eyes.

Fasten off and weave in ends on wrong side.

With white yarn and tapestry needle, sew on a small white line in the middle of the pupil.

Fasten off and weave in ends on wrong side.

Sew the eyes on the hat just above the nose.

Fasten off on the inside of the hat and weave in ends.

Eyebrows (make 2):

With black yarn and tapestry needle, sew on a eyebrow on either side above the eye on the hat.

Fasten off on the inside of the hat and weave in ends.

Faux fur:

With faux fur, pick up a st on the back where you fastened off and sc in each st around the hat, sl st to join.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Pick up a st on the bottom middle of the flap and sc evenly up the side of the hat, around the ears and down the other side of the hat until you reach the bottom middle of the flap on the other side.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Pinch the base of the ear together and with white yarn and tapestry needle, weave in and out through the back pinched portion of the ear, about 4-5 times.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Side braids:

Cut 12, 40″ strands of white yarn for each braid.

Fold the yarn in half and pull the middle through the middle base of the earflap.

Yarn over and pull all strands through.

Divide in 3 sections and braid down to the end.

Knot at the bottom and trim ends.

Repeat with other side.

Make sure when you are knotting the other end to check that it is even with your first braid.
