Materials:

– Size I (5.5 mm) and size G (4.25 mm) hooks

– Medium weight yarn (size 4) in pink, white and red

– Tapestry needle

Gauge:

11 sts x 7 rows = 4″ square

Final Measurements:

The game board measures approx. 5.5″ x 5.5″.

The heart pieces measure approx. 1″ x 1″.

Abbreviations:

st(s)- stitch(es)

ch-chain

hk- hook

sc- single crochet

hdc- half double crochet

sk- skip

sl st- slip stitch

Special Stitches:

Crab Stitch aka Reverse Single Crochet:

Instead of working a single crochet clockwise, you work a single crochet counter clockwise, creating a textured finish. You work in each st as normal, just reverse!

Pattern (front side):

With size I, 5.5 mm hook, ch 15 (with main color)

Row 1: Hdc in the 3rd ch from hk, hdc next 2 sts, *ch 1, sk next st, hdc next 3 sts,* repeat from * to end, turn (13).

Row 2: Ch 2, *Hdc next 4 sts, ch 1, sk next st,* repeat from * to end, turn (13).

Repeat row 2 for a total of 9 rows.

Fasten off, weave in end.

With white yarn, sl st every 3 rows across.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Sl st in the vertical rows (made by the skipped stitches).

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Pick up a st on any corner and ch 1, sc evenly around the entire piece with 2 sc in each corner, sl st to join.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Back side:

With main color, ch 15.

Row 1: Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hk and each ch across, turn (13).

Rows 2-9: Ch 2, hdc in each st across, turn (13).

Continue to sc evenly around the entire piece with 2 sc in each corner.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Lay the front piece on top of the back piece with the right side facing out and wrong sides facing each other.

Pick up a st on the top right corner through the two pieces and reverse single crochet (aka crab stitch) evenly through both sides around 3 sides of the piece.

When you reach the top left corner, continue to crab stitch around the front piece only (this will leave a pocket opening to store the playing pieces).
