How To Change Yarn Colors In Crochet 6 Best Ways

How To Change Yarn Colors In Crochet 6 Best Ways

how to change colors in crochet

Changing yarn colors in crochet can be so frustrating!

When you’re working on a crochet project, you want the color change to be as seamless as possible, without being able to tell where you switched colors, right?

Sounds simple enough, but when I first started out, I found it challenging to figure out the right way to change colors without it being noticed.

Whether you’re working with double crochet or single crochet stitches, in the middle of a row or at the end of a row, finding the best way to make those transitions look flawless can take a bit of practice.

I’ve spent a lot of time exploring different methods to achieve the perfect color change, so you don’t have to!

Below is a roundup of the best techniques that can give your crochet project that smooth, professional look, whether you’re changing in the middle of the row or at the end.

Be sure to check out my free crochet patterns!

6 Ways to Change Color in Crochet:

  1. Ashleigh from Sewrella.com has a great video tutorial to show you exactly how to change colors, especially when you are doing a lot of stripes.

2. Needlenoodles.com has a great tutorial (with video too!) on how to change colors in the round. This is a very helpful technique when changing color for hats!

3. Michael Sellick from allfreecrochet.com has a great video tutorial on how to change colors without using a knot in the technique. This is one I use all the time for my crochet projects.

4. June from PlanetJune.com shows 2 techniques that really give a perfect seamless color change when working in the round. Perfect for Amigurumi projects and hats!

5. Letscrochet.com shows you how to change colors without having any ends to weave in! This is a great technique to use to change color but also if you are at the end of a skein of yarn and need to add the same color to it to finish a project. No need for extra directions, the picture tutorial says it all.

6. Ashlea from Heart Hook Home has some great tips for changing colors of you are doing corner to corner crochet. She has a great video tutorial too!

Here are some quick helpful tips on how to change color in crochet:

  • Prepare the New Color: Before completing the last stitch of the row or round with the old color, pick up the new yarn color so it’s ready to use.
  • Switch on the Last Loop: Change to the new color by pulling it through the last loop of the old yarn, completing the stitch with the new color.
  • Standing Stitch for New Rows: When starting a new row or round with a new color, use a standing stitch to create a clean start.
  • Slip Stitch for Seamless Transitions: Use a slip stitch at the beginning or end of the row to smoothly transition between colors.
  • Weave in Loose Ends: Leave a 6-inch yarn tail when cutting the old yarn and weave it into the back of your work to secure the ends.
  • Tapestry Crochet for Short Distances: Carry the unused yarn color along the back of your work when making short color changes to keep the edges neat.
  • Practice Changing Colors Mid-Row: When changing colors in the middle of a row, ensure the color change happens just before completing the last stitch of the previous color.
  • Use Different Techniques for Different Projects: For continuous rounds, flat projects, or granny squares, use the technique that best suits the project to achieve smoother color changes.
  • Practice Basic Techniques: If you’re a beginner, start with basic techniques like the slip stitch or standing stitch to get comfortable with changing colors.
  • Secure Loose Ends Properly: Make sure to weave in and secure loose ends on the wrong side or back of the work for a clean finish.
  • Use Helpful Tutorials: Follow a crochet video tutorial or a step-by-step picture tutorial for visual guidance on changing colors.
  • Join Social Media Groups for Tips: Engage in social media groups or follow YouTube channels dedicated to crochet for additional tips and techniques.
  • Keep Yarn Tails Tidy: When changing colors, keep the yarn tails tidy by weaving them into the back of your work as you go to avoid bulky spots.
  • Experiment with Different Shades of Yarn: Practice color changes with various shades of yarn to see how they blend and create different effects in your project.
  • Start in the Right Place: For a smooth color change, ensure you start in the right place, whether it’s at the beginning, middle, or end of a row.

All of these techniques have really helped me when it comes to changing color and I hope they will helps you too!
