- K Hook
- Yarn: Lion Brand’s Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (Super Bulky, 6) in Fisherman (2 Skeins), about 8 oz.
- blunt needle
Hdc- half double crochet
sl st- slip stitch
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from the hook and each st to end, ch 2, turn.
Row 2: Hdc in back loops only of each st across, ch 2, turn.
Repeat row 2 until piece measures 19”.
Fold piece in half and line up sts. Sl st through the back loop only and stitch at the other end. Fasten off, weave in ends, then turn piece inside out.
Cut a long piece of yarn and thread through a blunt needle. Weave inside and out across the top of the hat (either end can be the top).
Turn inside out and pull ends together tightly. Weave in and out as many times as you need to make it feel tight and secure. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Cut a piece of cardboard 8″ long by 3.5″ wide. Wrap yarn around the cardboard lengthwise about 50 times. Cut yarn then carefully cut all the yarn at the top and bottom.
Lay a long strand of yarn down and lay all pieces on top of it in the middle. Tie strand tightly around all the strands and knot, tie again going the opposite direction and knot.
Trim around the strands to make the pom pom even (do not trim the 2 long strands from where you tied the shorter strands together).
Take the 2 long strands and pull them through the top of the hat with your hook. Using your blunt needle, thread each strand threw separately and weave in and out of the pom to secure it.
Fasten off strands on the inside of the hat and weave in ends.
Note: Do not use a pom pom maker…this will make the pom tight and fluffy but that is not what you want here. Making it by hand will cause it to have that floppy look.
You’re done! Enjoy your new beanie!
