Crochet Snowman Ornament

Materials

• Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
• Medium weight (size 4) yarn in:
  • White
  • Black
  • Orange
  • Pink
  • Scarf/accent color of choice — I used blue
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors
• Twine, ribbon, or yarn for hanging
• Stitch marker, optional for continuous rounds

Abbreviations

• BLO – back loop only
• ch – chain
• dc – double crochet
• hdc – half double crochet
• hk – hook
• sc – single crochet
• sc2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together
• sl st – slip stitch
• st(s) – stitch(es)

Measurements:

The large snowman ornament measures approx. 5 1/4″ x 3″

The small snowman ornament measures approx. 4 1/4″ x 2.5″

Large Snowman

Head

Make 2.

Make a magic circle.

Round 1: Ch 2, work 12 dc into the magic circle. Pull the circle closed and sl st to the first dc to join. (12 dc)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Eyes, Nose and Mouth

Choose one head panel to use as the front.

With black yarn and a tapestry needle, sew the eyes onto the right side of the head. Fasten off on the back. You can knot and trim the yarn ends since they will be hidden between the two head panels.

With orange yarn and a tapestry needle, sew a small carrot-shaped nose onto the center of the face.

With black yarn and a tapestry needle, sew the mouth below the nose.

Fasten off the nose and mouth on the back in the same way, knotting and trimming the yarn ends.

Body

Make 2.

Make a magic circle.

Round 1: Ch 2, work 12 dc into the magic circle. Pull the circle closed and sl st to the first dc to join. (12 dc)

Round 2: Ch 2, work 2 hdc in each st around. Sl st to the first hdc to join. (24 hdc)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Assembly

Place the two body panels together with the right sides facing out.

Join white yarn and sc through both layers in each st around the body. Sl st to the first sc to join.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Place the two head panels together with the right sides facing out.

Join white yarn and sc through both layers in each st around the head.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Using the long tail and a tapestry needle, sew the bottom of the head securely to the top of the body.

Fasten off on the back and weave in ends.

Scarf

Ch 3.

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hk and in the next ch, turn. (2 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (2 sc)

Repeat Row 2 until the scarf measures approximately 8″ long.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Wrap the scarf around the snowman’s neck, overlapping the ends slightly in the front.

Using a tapestry needle and matching yarn, sew the scarf in place.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Optional Fringe

Cut 2 pieces of yarn for each end of the scarf.

Fold one piece of yarn in half. Insert your hook into the end st of the scarf and pull the folded center through. Pull the loose ends through the loop and tighten gently.

Repeat in the next st.

Trim the fringe to approximately ½” long, or to your desired length.

Repeat on the opposite end of the scarf.

Hat (black)

With black yarn, make a magic circle.

Round 1: Work 6 sc into the magic circle. Pull the circle closed. (6 sc)

Work in continuous rounds.

Round 2: Sc in the BLO of each st around. (6 sc)

Round 3: Sc in the BLO of each st around. (6 sc)

Round 4: Work 2 sc in each st around. Sl st to the first sc to join. (12 sc)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Using black yarn and a tapestry needle, sew the hat securely onto the top of the snowman’s head.

Pink Hat Pom-Pom

With white yarn, make a magic circle.

Round 1: Work 4 sc into the magic circle. Sl st to first sc to join and pull the circle closed. (4 sc)

Round 2: Sc in each st around. (4 sc)

Round 3: Sc2tog twice. (2 sc)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Using a tapestry needle, sew the pom-pom securely to the top of the hat before attaching the hat to the snowman.

Pink Hat

With pink yarn, make a magic circle.

Round 1: Work 6 sc into the magic circle. Sl st to first sc to join and pull the circle closed. (6 sc)

Continue working in rounds.

Round 2: Work 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc)

Rounds 3–4: Sc in each st around. (12 sc)

Round 5: Working in the BLO, sc in each st around. Sl st to first sc to join. (12 sc)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Once the pom-pom has been sewn to the hat, position the hat on top of the snowman’s head. Using the long tail and a tapestry needle, sew the hat securely in place.

Hanging Loop

Cut a long piece of ribbon, twine, or yarn and fold it in half.

Using your crochet hook, pull the folded center through the top middle of the hat.

Pull the loose ends through the loop and tighten gently.

Tie the two ends together at the top to create a hanging loop.

Trim the ends as desired.

Kid Snowman

Head

Make 2.

Make a magic circle.

Round 1: Ch 2, work 12 hdc into the magic circle. Pull the circle closed and sl st to the first hdc to join. (12 hdc)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Body

Make 2.

Make a magic circle.

Round 1: Ch 2, work 12 dc into the magic circle. Pull the circle closed and sl st to the first dc to join. (12 dc)

Round 2: Ch 1, work 2 sc in each st around. Sl st to the first sc to join. (24 sc)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Round 1: Ch 1, work 6 sc into the magic circle. Pull the circle closed and sl st to the first sc to join. (6 sc)

Fasten off and weave in the ends of the first earmuff.

For the second earmuff, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Place one earmuff on each side of the snowman’s head.

Using the long tail and a tapestry needle, sew the first earmuff securely in place. Continue sewing carefully along the top of the head to create the earmuff band.

Sew the second earmuff securely to the opposite side of the head.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Pink Bow

With pink yarn, ch 3.

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hk and in the next ch, turn. (2 sc)

Rows 2–4: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (2 sc)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for shaping and sewing. Weave in the short beginning tail.

Using the long tail and a tapestry needle, bring the yarn to the center of the bow. Wrap the yarn snugly around the middle approximately 6 times to create the center of the bow.

To secure, insert the needle through the back of the wrapped center several times.

Position the bow on the snowman’s head and sew securely in place.

Fasten off and weave in the remaining end.

Scarf

Ch 40.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Fold the chain in half and place the folded center around the snowman’s neck.

Pull the two loose ends through the folded loop and gently tighten to secure the scarf in place.
