Materials

• Size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook
• Medium weight (size 4) yarn (acrylic or cotton) in 4 colors
  • 3 colors for the pumpkin rounds
  • Green or brown for the stem
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors

Abbreviations

• ch – chain
• dc – double crochet
• hk – hook
• sc – single crochet
• sl st – slip stitch
• sp – space
• st(s) – stitch(es)

Special Stitch

Puff Stitch: Yarn over, insert hk into the indicated sp and pull up a loop. Yarn over, insert hk into the same sp and pull up a loop, repeat from * to * 2 more times. Yarn over and pull through all loops on the hk. Ch 1 to close. 1 puff st made.

Size:

Measures approx. 4″ x 4″.

Pattern

Make a magic circle.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as the first dc and ch-1 sp). Dc in the magic circle, ch 1, repeat from * to * 10 times. Sl st to the 2nd ch of the beginning ch 3 to join. (11 dc, 11 ch-1 sps)

Round 2: Change to a new color. Do not ch. Work a puff st directly into the first ch-1 sp and in each ch-1 sp around. Sl st to the first puff st to join. (11 puff sts)

Round 3: Change to a new color. Do not ch. Work 2 puff sts in each of the next 5 sps between the puff sts. Sl st in the next sp. Work 2 puff sts in each of the next 5 sps. Sl st to the first puff st to join. (20 puff sts)

Stem

Switch to green or brown yarn.

Ch 4.

Sc in the 2nd ch from the hk and in each of the next 2 chs. (3 sc)

Fasten off.

Weave in all ends.

One pumpkin coaster is complete. Repeat the pattern to make as many coasters as desired.
