This bag is created using two classic granny squares that are joined together, then finished with a simple scalloped border for a cute decorative touch.
I love projects like this because they work up quickly and are perfect for using cotton yarn.
The finished bag is great for kids or adults and is just the right size for carrying small essentials like a phone, keys, or a few little treasures.
You can make this bag in a single color for a classic look, or change colors each round if you prefer a traditional granny square style.
The size can also easily be adjusted by adding or subtracting rounds.

Materials
• Size H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
• Medium weight cotton (size 4), approx. 145–155 yards for child size, 160–180 yards for adult size. I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in “Forest” for the green bag, “Aspyn” for the turquoise bag, “Gold” for the gold bag, and “Hot Rose” for the pink bag. 1 skein for the adult sized bag, approx. 3.5 oz, 180 yards, 100 grams
• Tapestry needle
For Lining (optional)
• Cotton fabric (enough for 2 squares, slightly larger than finished crochet square)
• Sewing needle
• Strong sewing thread
• Straight pins
• Iron

sl st – slip stitch

Notes
• Ch 3 at beginning of round counts as dc.
• Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3.

Round 1:
Ch 4, sl st to first ch to form a ring (or use a magic circle).
Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 2.
3 dc in ring, ch 2.
3 dc in ring, ch 2.
3 dc in ring, ch 2.
Sl st to top of beginning ch 3 to join.
(4 clusters, 4 ch-2 corner spaces)
Round 2:
Sl st into next ch-2 corner space.
Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in same space.
(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner space.
(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner space.
(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner space.
Sl st to top of beginning ch 3 to join.

Sizing:
– Kid size: stop after Round 6
– Adult size: stop after Round 7
Fasten off. Make a second square.
Joining Squares
Place squares with wrong sides together. Join yarn at the top corner space. Ch 1, sc evenly across 3 sides, working 3 sc in each corner. Do not fasten off.
Simple Scallop Border
Ch 4, turn, sk next 2 sts, *sl st, ch 4, sk next 2 sts.* Repeat from * around the 3 sides, ending with a sl st.
Ch 1, turn, *sc 4 around the ch 4, sl st in next st (same st you sl st in from previous row)*, repeat from * one 3 sides.
Sl st in last st.
Top Edge
Continue to sc evenly around entire top opening. Sl st to first sc to join. Fasten off, weave in end.
Flap
The flap is worked separately, then sewn to the top back edge of the bag so it folds over the front.
Row 1
Ch 4, sl st to first ch to form a ring (or use a magic circle).
Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 2, 3 dc in ring.
You now have: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc.
Row 2
Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn.
2 dc in first st.
Dc in each st across to ch-2 space.
In ch-2 space work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc.
Dc in each st to last st.
3 dc in last st.
Turn.
Rows 3+
Repeat Row 2.
Continue until the flap is approximately the same width as the bag (about 6–7 inches depending on size).
Fasten off.
Flap Scallop Border
Row 1
Continue to ch 4, turn, *skip next 2 sts, sl st in next st, ch 4*, skip next 2 sts.
Repeat from * around the 3 sides of the flap, ending with a sl st.
Row 2
Ch 1, turn.
Work *4 sc around the ch-4 space, sl st in the next st* (the same stitch you slip stitched into on the previous row).
Repeat from * around the 3 sides of the flap.
Sl st in last st and fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Attach Flap
Center the straight edge of the flap along the top back edge of the bag.
Using a tapestry needle and yarn, sew the flap securely to the bag through the crochet stitches only.
Strap
Pick up a st on the corner side of the bag.
Chain desired length:
Little kid – 125 chains
Older kid – 140 chains
Teen/Adult – 155 chains
Sl st to opposite side of bag. Ch 1, turn, sc in each chain across.
Ch 1, turn, sl st in each st across. Sl st into bag to secure. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Optional Button Closure
Sew a button (approximately 1¼”) onto the front of the bag, positioning it where the flap naturally meets the bag when folded closed.
To close the bag, slip the ch-2 space at the tip of the V-shaped flap over the button.
Sew button on before adding lining.
Lining (optional)
Place one crocheted square on top of two layers of cotton fabric.
Cut around square leaving about ½–1″ extra fabric on all sides.
Place fabric pieces right sides together and sew around 3 sides using a ½–1″ seam allowance, beginning and ending stitching 1″ below the top edge.
Leave the top open.
Turn lining right side out. Fold the top edge down 1″ toward the inside and press flat with an iron.
Optional Snap Closure
Sew on snap closures before inserting lining.
Place lining inside bag and align folded top edge with bag opening.
Pin in place.
Using a sewing needle and strong thread, sew lining to bag by inserting needle horizontally along the top edge and catching the inside crochet stitches.
Continue around the entire opening. Knot securely and fasten off.

This is definitely missing steps for the squares, it is a shame because I really wanted to make this bag. can you double check your directions & let me know please
There are not any steps missing. The squares are repeat rounds given in the directions. There are 6 rounds for the child size and 7 rounds for the adult size. I will go ahead and write everything out instead of repeating rounds. Hope this helps!
Thank you, can you double check the instructions on the flap, it says to turn at the end of row 1, then row 2 says to ch 3 & turn, is that correct? Just checking, that is the step I’m on now, thanks again
