If you love classic granny squares, this free crochet pattern is the perfect project to try.
In this blog post, I’m sharing an easy crochet pattern for a beautiful bag made from two classic granny squares joined together to create a timeless square design.
Whether you’re a beginner crocheter or have been making square bag patterns for years, this smaller bag is a great way to play with color and build confidence.
This crochet granny project uses medium weight (size 4) worsted weight cotton yarn and a Size H (5.00 mm) mm hook, making it approachable for all skill levels.
You’ll work each square pattern in the round, placing 3 double crochet stitches in each space and building corners in every chain space and next ch-2 sp.
With a color change at the end of every round, you can use six shades total or create your own color combo using a main color and contrast color.
A great project to use yarn from your stash — especially if you love switching to a new color often.
You can make the adult size (7 x 7″) or a smaller granny version for kids (6 x 6″), and it’s easy to adjust by adding more or fewer rounds.
Try a solid color for a modern look, or mix your favorite colors for that bold, retro vibe inspired by big granny squares.
Personally, my personal favorite is combining a neutral first color with bright contrast shades for a playful finish.
The top of the bag is joined with single crochet, and the strap is worked directly onto the bag for a clean edge.
You’ll weave in loose ends with your yarn needle and tapestry needles, and if you’d like a polished interior, you can add a cotton yarn lining using cotton fabric and basic sewing supplies.
There are different ways to finish it too — add a snap closure or a button depending on your style.
This free pattern is a fun twist on the traditional granny square tote bag, but scaled down into a smaller bag that’s perfect for everyday wear. However you choose your yarn weight, hook size, and color combo, this square motif design is easy to customize.
I can’t wait to see your beautiful bag — be sure to share your square design on social media and tag me so I can see your favorite colors in action!
Happy crocheting!

Lining
Place one crocheted square on top of two layers of cotton fabric.
Cut around the square, leaving approximately .5″-1″ of extra fabric on all sides.
Place the two fabric pieces right sides together.
Sew around 3 sides, using a .5″-1″ seam allowance. Begin and end your stitching 1″ below the top edge on both sides. Leave the top open.
Turn the lining right side out.
Fold the top edge down 1″ toward the inside and press flat with an iron.
Optional: Snap Closure
If adding snap closures, install them now.
Line them up carefully and sew securely to the bag on either side before inserting the lining.
Place the lining inside the crochet bag. Align the folded top edge of the lining with the top edge of the bag and pin in place.
Using a sewing needle and strong thread, sew the lining to the bag by inserting the needle horizontally along the top edge, then catching the inside stitches of the crochet fabric. Continue this stitch evenly around the entire top edge.
Knot securely and fasten off.
Optional Button Closure
Attach yarn at the center top edge of the bag.
Ch 5, sl st in same stitch to form a loop.
Ch 1, work 6 sc into the ch-5 loop.
Sl st to first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Sew a button onto the front of the bag, sewing through the crochet stitches only (do not sew through the lining).
Fasten off and weave in ends.
