Materials

  • Size H (5.00 mm) crochet hook

  • Medium weight (size 4) yarn

    • Sample shown uses Yarnspirations Caron Cinnamon Swirl Cakes in “Strawberry Swirl” for the multi-colored headband

  • Tapestry needle


Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain

  • st(s) – stitch(es)

  • hk – hook

  • hdc – half double crochet

  • hdc sl st – half double crochet slip stitch

  • BLO – back loop only

  • sl st – slip stitch


Gauge

14 sts x 13 rows = 4″ square


Notes

  • Not all medium weight yarns are created equal. Some are thinner or thicker than others.

  • You may need to work more or fewer rows than indicated to achieve the desired width.

  • This pattern is designed to create a thick headband—continue working the pattern until your desired width is reached.


Special Stitch

Half Double Crochet Slip Stitch (hdc sl st):
Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
Do not yarn over again; instead, pull the first loop directly through the remaining two loops on the hook.

Starting Chain

  • Newborn: Ch 41

  • Baby: Ch 47

  • Toddler: Ch 53

  • Child: Ch 59

  • Adult: Ch 65


Row 1

Hdc sl st in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across, turn.

  • Newborn: 40 sts

  • Baby: 46 sts

  • Toddler: 52 sts

  • Child: 58 sts

  • Adult: 64 sts


Row 2

Ch 1, hdc sl st in BLO of each st across, turn.
(Stitch count remains the same)


Repeat

Repeat Row 2:

  • Newborn: 10 rows total

  • Baby: 12 rows total

  • Toddler: 14 rows total

  • Child: 16 rows total

  • Adult: 16 rows total


Finished Measurements (Approximate)

  • Newborn: 2¾” wide x 13″ long

  • Baby: 3¼” wide x 15″ long

  • Toddler: 3¾” wide x 17″ long

  • Child: 4½” wide x 18″ long

  • Adult: 4½” wide x 19″ long


Finishing

Fold the piece in half lengthwise.
Single crochet the short ends together across.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
