If you’re looking for a fun and easy pattern to brighten up your winter makes, this free crochet pattern is a great way to dive into chevron stitch and zigzag designs without any fuss.
This hat uses worsted weight yarn and classic double crochet stitches to create a beautiful texture with a modern twist, making it one of those versatile crochet project ideas you’ll reach for again and again.
I love crochet hats that come together quickly, offer different sizes, and allow plenty of color choices, and this stitch pattern is perfect for experimenting with different colors, a new color in each repeat row, or subtle color changes for a classic look.
Whether you enjoy free patterns, warmer patterns, fun designs, or crochet beanies with a little extra personality, this zigzag pattern is a great addition to your next project.
It also makes a thoughtful handmade gift, especially when you customize the color combinations using your favorite weight of medium weight yarn. The texture of the hat comes from simple increases worked before the next stitch and clean cluster work in between each last stitch of the row, giving the whole piece much attention without adding difficulty.
The skill level is friendly—even if you’re still building your crochet skills—and the easy flow of the last row makes it a relaxing project for all makers.
This crochet chevron pattern is ideal for personal use, and if you love free chevron crochet patterns or free zigzag crochet patterns, you’ll enjoy the smooth rhythm of the chevron designs throughout.
I’m sharing a friendly version of the instructions here, plus an ad-free print or printable pdf option in my shop, Ravelry store and Etsy shop for those who prefer a clean layout.

I hope you enjoy this pattern as much as I did—it’s a great way to explore your hook size preferences and play with color choices while creating a cozy, stylish piece from start to finish.

Materials:
– Size H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
– Medium weight (size 4) yarn in 4 colors: white, red, bright green, green (I used Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Yarn”).
– Tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
st(s) – stitch(es)
sl st – slip stitch
sk – skip
Notes:
• Do NOT chain at the beginning of the zig zag color rounds.
• This prevents a visible seam and keeps the zig-zag cluster pattern uniform.
• You will always work in between the 2 dc clusters from the previous round to create the zig zag pattern.
