Popcorn Stitch:
The popcorn stitch creates a raised, textured “popcorn” effect. Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Crochet 5 double crochet (dc) stitches into the same stitch.
Step 2: Remove the hook from the loop.
Step 3: Insert the hook into the first dc of the group.
Step 4: Grab the dropped loop and pull it through the first dc.
Step 5: Tighten the stitch and continue with the pattern.
Pattern (make 8 squares):
Round 1: Start with color A, make a magic circle, ch 2. Hdc 12 in circle, pull to close, sl st to join (12).
Round 2: Switch to color B, ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc 4 in same st, *popcorn, ch 2, 5 dc in next st,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (12 popcorns made, with ch 2 between each one).
Fasten off. With color C, pick up a st anywhere over a ch 2 space and ch 2 (counts as a dc).

Joining Squares:
You know have 8 squares.
Lay 4 squares down and start joining them together.
I used the slip stitch join method with the matching color yarn and tapestry needle (for the pink bag, I used the whip stitch join for the blue bag), but you can use any joining method you like!
1. Slip Stitch Join (pink bag)
- Look: Flat and neat with a subtle ridge.
- How-To: Place squares right sides together and slip stitch through both loops of each stitch across the edge.
- Tip: Use the same color yarn for a seamless look or a contrasting one for a pop!
Here is another way to join your granny squares:
2. Whip Stitch Join (blue bag)
- Look: Almost invisible if done with matching yarn.
- How-To: With right sides facing each other, use a yarn needle to sew the squares together through the back loops only.
- Tip: Fast and clean – great for keeping things looking uniform.
Once you have joined your 4 squares together, repeat with the other 4 squares and weave in all ends.
For the pink bag:
Lay your pieces together with the right sides facing out.
Start in the top left corner and sc through both sides in each st around the 3 sides of the bag with 2 sc in each corner.
When you reach the top right side of the bag, do not fasten off.
For the blue bag:
Lay your right sides facing each other. Whip stitch through the back loops only along the 3 sides, leaving the top of the bag open.
Turn inside out so the right sides are facing out.
For both bags:
Continue to sc evenly around the top of the bag, sl st in first st and continue with chaining the strap.
Continue to chain the corresponding strap size:
Little kid size– 120 chains, 14 inch strap drop
Older kid size– 130 chains, 16 inch strap drop
Teen size– 140 chains, 18 inch strap drop
Adult size– 150 chains, 20 inch strap drop
Sl st in the other end of the bag, ch 1, turn, sl st in each st across the strap to the other side of the bag.
Sl st in end st and fasten off, weave in ends.
