Create these amazing Bernie inspired crochet mittens!
Bernie Sanders wore some handmade sweater mittens at President Joe Biden’s inauguration and they have been the talk on many news shows and created into funny memes.
You can make a pair too! Well at least my inspired design of his mittens 🙂
This pattern is for an adult size.
The final mittens measures approx. 11″ long by 4.5″ wide.
Make it a set with my crochet Bernie beanie pattern!

Materials:
- Hook size I, 5.5 mm
- Tapestry needle
- Medium worsted weight yarn (size 4) in brown, ivory, white, black, gray and navy
Abbreviations:
st(s)- stitch(es)
ch- chain
splsc- split stitch single crochet
splsc2tog- split stitch single crochet 2 together
Gauge:
7 sts X 8 rows = 2″ square
Waistcoat Stitch/Split single crochet:
splsc- split single crochet- Instead of doing a sc as normal you will work in the middle of the V part from the previous row and sc, also known as a split single crochet (splsc). This creates a knit style look.
Notes:
- Each stitch of the mitten will use the waistcoat/split single crochet stitch
- Mittens are worked from the bottom up and from right to left
- When switching colors, carry along the color strand not in use and crochet over it.
- It helps to keep one color to the back and one color to the front when changing colors so you do not get them tangled.
Chart notes:
- The chart is of the front and back of the mitten. The pattern is the front side (top of hand) and the gray/navy is the back side (under hand).
- The chart is worked in the round, there are no slip stitches or chains at each new row. Work continuously, place a stitch marker on every row if you need to.

Pattern:
With brown color ch 29, sl st to join. Follow the chart from right to left.
The first row on the chart will be all in sc.
Right hand Thumb:
On row 22 at the 15th stitch in (where pattern changes to solid blue color) ch 6 sts, sk next 6 sts (for thumb), continue to work the chart as usual.
On row 23, sc into each of the 6 ch’s you made in the previous row then continue work the chart as usual.
Left hand Thumb:
On row 22 at the 21st stitch in ch 6 sts, sk next 6 sts (for thumb), continue to work the chart as usual.
On row 23, sc into each of the 6 ch’s you made in the previous row then continue work the chart as usual.
After you’ve worked the chart:
Do not fasten off. Turn your mitten inside out and weave in all your ends. Turn back right side out and continue with white yarn.
Next row: *splsc2tog, splsc next 2 sts,* repeat from * around.
Next row: *Splsc2tog, splsc next st,* repeat from * around.
Last row: Splsc2tog around (if it’s too hard to do the splsc2tog with the I hook, you can switch to a smaller hook for this part), sl at in last st. Fasten off leaving a long tail. With blunt needle weave in and out at the top of the mitten to secure it closed and fasten off and weave in end on the inside (turn mitten inside out).
Finishing Thumb:
Pick up at stitch at the base of the thumb hole and sc 12 evenly around (splsc in stitches along base of thumbhole).
Rows 1-10: Splsc in each st around (12).
Row 11: Splsc2tog around (6).
Fasten off leaving a tail to weave in and out in the end of the thumb with blunt needle. Fasten off and weave in end on the inside of the thumb (turn thumb inside out).
Hi Laura,
I have a question about the thumb placement. I’m a left handed crocheter. Would I work the left hand thumb starting at stitch 28 of row 22(chain 6, skip 6 and continue), and then the right hand thumb starting at stitch 21 of row 22(chain 6, skip 6 and continue)? Being left handed, I would have to read the chart from the bottom left to right. This pattern looks fun. Can’t wait to try it!
If you are working the graph from left to right the thumb hole you would start the thumb where the thumbhole ended when working from right to left..so yes, I believe you have it right where to start it 🙂 Hope you enjoy the pattern!
Thanks so much for your response!
Hi … curious if you carry a few strands at a time or continuously tie off / re stand? Thanks for the graph!!
Yes you can carry the strands with you and they won’t show through. I did try it both ways and found carrying more strands saved time on weaving in ends and the result looked the same. There will still be strands to cut off and weave in later but not as many.
Thanks 💕
Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome!
Is there a video to follow along?
Thank you!
I just made one today and added it to the post 🙂
Hello. What size chart paper should I use to copy mitten? Lovely pattern
Sorry, I’m not sure, I create my charts using stitch fiddle.
Hi, can I keep the palm in brown instead of adding two extra colors (blue and grey)?
Thanks.
Of course, the stitch count would stay the same, just keep it brown instead of blue and grey 🙂
Just want to say thanks for the pattern. Glad to find a designer that lives up where I grew up. I lived in TC back in the 60’s and 70’s. Miss being up there.
You do great work!
Thanks so much! I love it here 🙂
