Crochet Family Santa hat

Create this cute and easy crochet family Santa hat for the whole family! 

The hat works up quickly and has cute white detail and a crochet ball for the pom! 

You will be starting at the tail of the hat and working your way down the body to the base of the hat. 

Written in 7 sizes:

0-3M, 3-6M, 6-12M, toddler, child, teen/small adult and adult

Materials:

  • Size H, 5.00mm hook
  • Medium worsted weight yarn (size 4), I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in red and white
  • Tapestry needle
  • Small amount of stuffing (for pom)

Abbreviations:

st(s)- stitches

ch- chain

sc- single crochet

dc- double crochet

hdc- half double crochet

sc2tog- single crochet two together

sl st- slip stitch

sk- skip

Special Stitches:

Bead stitch: After you’ve made your dc, yo and insert hook around the post you made with the dc. You will be working sideways. Yo again and insert hook around the dc, yo one more time and insert hook again around the dc. Yo and pull through all loops, 1 bead stitch made.

Note:

If you would like your hat to be longer, add more dc rounds before the “continue with bottom of hat section.”

Gauge:

12 sts X 7 rows = 4” square

Start all sizes:

Make a magic circle, ch 2, dc 8 in circle and sl st to close (8).

Row 1: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (8).

Row 2: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next st,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (12).

Row 3: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (12).

Row 4: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 2 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (16).

Row 5: Dc in each st around, sl st to close (16).

Row 6: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 3 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (20).

Row 7: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to close (20).

Row 8: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 4 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (24).

Row 9: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (24).

Row 10: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 5 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (28).

Row 11: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (28).

Row 12: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 6 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (32).

Row 13: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (32).

Row 14: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 7 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (36).

Row 15: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (36).

Row 16: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 8 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (40).

Row 17: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (40).

Row 18: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 9 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (44).

***Stop here for 0-3M size and continue with “bottom of hat” section)***

Row 19: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (44).

Row 20: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 10 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (48).

***Stop here for 3-6M size and continue with “bottom of hat” section)***

Row 21: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (48).

Row 22: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 11 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (52).

***Stop here for 6-12M and continue with “bottom of hat” section)***

Row 23: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (52).

Row 24: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 12 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (56).

***Stop here for toddler size and continue with “bottom of hat” section)***

Row 25: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (56).

Row 26: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 13 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (60).

***Stop here for child size and continue with “bottom of hat” section)***

Row 27: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (60).

Row 28: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 14 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (64).

***Stop here for teen/small adult size and continue with “bottom of hat” section)***

Row 29: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to join (64).

Row 30: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc next 15 sts,* repeat from * around, sl st to join (68).

***Stop here for adult size and continue with “bottom of hat” section)***

Bottom of hat:

Row 1: Switch to white yarn, ch 2, hdc in each st around, sl st to join.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in the third loop only in each st around, sl st to join.

Row 3: Ch 2, sk next st, *dc in next, bead st around the dc you made, ch 1, sk next st,* repeat from * around, ending with a bead st around the ch 2, sl st to join.

Row 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in between each bead st from previous row, sl st to join.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in the 3rd loop only around, sl st to join.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Pom:

Make a magic circle, ch 1. 8 sc in circle, sl st to close.

***You will now work in the round, place stitch marker here if you need to***

Row 1: 2 sc in each st around (16).

Row 2: Sc in each st around (16).

Row 3: *2 sc, sc next 3 sts,* repeat from * around (20).

Rows 4-6: Sc in each st around (20).

Row 7: *Sc2tog, sc next 3 sts,* repeat from * around (16).

Row 8: Sc2tog around, stuff stuffing as you go (8).

Fasten off leaving a long tail. With tapestry needle sew the pom closed then attach it to the hat. Fasten off and weave in ends.

    Under the title, “Bottom of Hat,” You are missing row 4, in the instructions. The hat is cute as can be! Just wanted to let you know about the missing row instructions.

    What is the easiest way to attach the pom pom I have made 3 and adorable but my pom looks sloppy when attached. I appreciate your help.

      Hi! I use a blunt needle and attach the tip of the hat through the pom and back several times until I feel it is secure, then fasten off and weave in ends. Hope this helps!

    Is the bead stitch made in the top loops of sc or the third loop? It doesn’t say.
