Looking for a fun crochet beard pattern for a Viking hat, Santa hat, costume, or dress-up project?

This easy crochet beard is simple to make and can be customized in several sizes for babies, toddlers, children, teens, and adults.

The beard starts with a small crocheted base, then long strands of yarn are attached to create a full, textured look.

You can add ear loops to wear the beard on its own, or leave them off and sew the beard directly onto a crochet hat. There’s also an optional mustache and braided detail for even more personality.

For the beard base, you’ll need medium (size 4) worsted weight yarn, along with the recommended crochet hook for your size.

Use a soft or textured yarn for the beard itself to create anything from a rugged Viking beard to a fluffy white Santa beard.

It’s a fun, customizable pattern that works especially well for Halloween costumes, Christmas projects, themed hats, photo props, and imaginative dress-up.

Materials

For Beard Base:

• Medium (size 4) worsted weight yarn
  Sample shown uses Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice.

For Beard:

• Medium (size 4) textured yarn
  Sample shown uses Red Heart Symphony in Sierra (red beard).
• For the Santa beard, use a bulky textured yarn such as Bernat Pipsqueak.

Additional Materials:

• Blunt tapestry needle
• Scissors

Hooks & Sizing

• Baby: Size E (3.50 mm) crochet hook
• Small Toddler: Size F (3.75 mm) crochet hook
• Toddler/Child: Size G (4.00 mm) crochet hook
• Teen/Small Adult: Size H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
• Adult: Size I (5.50 mm) crochet hook

Abbreviations

• ch – chain
• dc – double crochet
• hk – hook
• sc – single crochet
• sl st – slip stitch
• st(s) – stitch(es)

Pattern Notes

• The beard base is made in two rows.
• The beginning ch 2 in Row 2 counts as the first dc.
• Ear loops are optional. If you are sewing the beard directly onto a hat, omit the ear loops and fasten off where instructed.
• Ear loop sizes:
  • Baby: Ch 8
  • Small Toddler/Toddler/Child: Ch 10
  • Teen/Small Adult/Adult: Ch 12

Beard Base

Ch 31.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. (30 sts)

If making ear loops, continue according to size:

• Baby: Ch 8.
• Small Toddler/Toddler/Child: Ch 10.
• Teen/Small Adult/Adult: Ch 12.

Sl st in the first ch of the ear loop to form a loop. Fasten off.

If sewing the beard directly onto a hat: Do not make the ear loop. Fasten off after completing Row 1.

Row 2: With the opposite side of the foundation ch facing up, skip the first 6 sts. Join yarn in the 7th st and ch 2. The ch 2 counts as the first dc. Dc in next 4 sts, ch 10, skip next 8 sts, dc in next 5 sts. Fasten off.

The ch-10 space creates the mouth opening.

To make the second ear loop, join yarn at the end of Row 2 and ch according to size:

• Baby: Ch 8.
• Small Toddler/Toddler/Child: Ch 10.
• Teen/Small Adult/Adult: Ch 12.

Sl st in the first ch to form the ear loop. Fasten off.

If sewing the beard directly onto a hat: Do not make the second ear loop.

Weave in all ends.

Adding the Beard

Cut yarn strands to the following approximate lengths:

• Baby: 12″
• Small Toddler/Toddler/Child: 30″
• Teen/Small Adult/Adult: 38″

You can adjust the strand length to make the beard shorter or longer.

For medium weight yarn, hold 3 strands together. For bulky yarn, hold 2 strands together.

Fold the strands in half. Insert your hook through a stitch along the beard base and pull the folded center of the strands through to form a loop. Pull all of the loose ends through the loop and tighten gently.

Continue attaching strands along the bottom edge and upper sections of the beard base, leaving the mouth opening uncovered.

Continue until the beard is as full as desired.

Mustache

Cut 3 strands of yarn to the following lengths:

• Baby: 37″
• Small Toddler/Toddler/Child: 50″
• Teen/Small Adult/Adult: 57″

For bulky yarn, use 2 strands instead of 3.

Hold the strands together and fold them in half.

Starting at the upper right side of the mouth opening, pull the folded loop through the beard base. Using the strands together, sl st across the upper edge of the mouth opening to create the mustache.

When finished, weave the remaining yarn through the beard so the ends come out among the beard strands. Blend the ends into the beard.

Optional Braided Mustache Detail

Cut approximately 20 strands of yarn to the following lengths:

• Baby: 40″
• Small Toddler/Toddler/Child: 50″
• Teen/Small Adult/Adult: 60″

Gather the strands together and tie securely at the top.

Divide the strands into 3 sections and braid the entire length. Tie a knot at the bottom to secure the braid.

Position the braid across the upper lip of the beard.

Using a separate piece of matching yarn and a tapestry needle, sew the center of the braid securely to the center of the upper lip.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
