Do not fasten off on orange ears. Take a white ear and place it on top of the orange ear and sc around the ear through the back loop of the white ear and the back loop of the orange ear. Switch to black yarn for the last 3 sts. Fasten off and weave in end.

Cut piece of orange yarn and with blunt needle sew onto hat starting from the 3rd row from the top. Weave in ends.

Nose (white yarn):

Find the middle point of the hat between the ears on the last row. Count 3 sts over to the right and sc 6.

Row 1: Sc2tog, sc next 2 sts, sc2tog (4).

Row 2. Ch 1, sc in each st across. (4).

Row 3: Ch 1, sctog, twice (2).

Eyes:

Sew on eyes 5 rows down from the top.

Side Braids:

Holding all 3 colors together (orange, white, black), cut 6, 40″ strands of yarn (of each color). Fold in half, insert hook in the enter of the base of the earflap and grab the center of the yarn strands with your hook.

Yarn over and pull all strands through the loop. You may need to use a larger hook to get all the yarn strands though the base of the earflap, then I just pull the yarn through with my hand.

Divide yarn into 3 sections by color and braid down. At the base you will knot and pull tightly to secure. Trim ends. Repeat on other side.

On the baby hat, row 2-3 doesn’t add up. I’m having trouble figuring it out. Row 2 ends with 24 stitches. Then row 3 ends in 32. Every other stitch on row 3 is 3DC in one, right? So how can it end up only adding 8 stitches? I’m not understanding and could really use some help! Thanks!

Thanks for pointing this out Kyndal! This was a typo I thought I had fixed, it should actually be 2 dc, not 3 dc. I just updated it, sorry for the confusion!

Hello! Super cute pattern however I am a bit confused. Does the chain 2 at the beginning of each row count as a stitch? For Row 1, are we supposed to join with slip stitch or not? It’s not listed to do so, however when I don’t it leaves a large space in my work. I guess that could be a button hole but I was just wondering. Please let me know when you can!

Yes join with a sl st, the ch 2 does not count as a stitch. Hope this helps!

This hat is adorable. I started making the child’s size for my 9-year-old, but the cap was so shallow. I made the adult version, but it still seems very shallow. It barely covers her head. Is it supposed to be that way or can I add rows of orange? Would I continue to increase until I get to the desires size before starting the DC in each ST? Thank you.

Hi, are you using bulky weight (5) yarn? I wrote the pattern for that yarn weight so if your yarn is thinner it will turn out small. You can always increase until you get your desired circumference then start your dc’s in each st. Hope this helps!

Thank you. I was using Big Twist Classic, which was classified as “bulky” according to the package, but after reading reviews on it, apparently, other people find it lighter than it is supposed to be. I think it’s even thinner than my usual #4 Worsted. I’ll take your advice and keep going until I get the desired size, then continue with the pattern. Thanks!

What does “with orange yarn make a magic circle” mean in the Woodland Fox Hat instructions? What is a magic circle? Thanks DJ

How do I crochet through the back loop of the orange ear and the back loop of the white ear? Would you happen to have pictures or a video? I’m having a rough time grasping the concept, thanks! 😊

Hi, unfortunately I don’t have a video but you are working the stitch in the back loops of each piece together so they join together.

I’m working on the toddler size. In row 2, you say to Ch 2, 2 dc in same ch 2 space. When I do that I get 2 extra stitches (32). If I Ch 2 and then start the pattern in the next st (dc in next, 2 dc in next), then I get 30. Am I doing something wrong or do you mean not to start in the same ch 2 space?
