Create this cute crochet heart tote bag!
This bag is so much fun to make! Great for leftover yarn you don’t know what to do with!
This hearts of love crochet tote bag uses a simple heart chart and single crochets to make fun and colorful heart squares that are single crocheted together to form the body of the bag.
The handles are then added to create this fun happy tote! If you have never worked with charts before, this is a great, easy chart to get started on.
This pattern uses a hook size G and 100% cotton yarn, I used Lilys Sugar N’ Cream. This bag can also be made with medium worsted weight yarn.
The bag measures 15″ X 15″ with a 8.5″ strap drop. Each heart square is 5″ X 5″.
Enjoy the free chart and pattern!

-Hook size G, 4.25 mm
-Blunt needle
Abbreviations:
ch- chain
sc- single crochet
sl st- slip stitch
st(s)- stitch (es)
Chart graph- both sides of bag:
Complete the chart exactly as shown. Work from bottom to top or top to bottom, your choice!
Chart graph tips:
- Always bring the yarn you are not using to the front. (for example, when you are switching from ivory to red, bring the ivory strand to the front and continue with the red, do not sc over the ivory or it will bleed through and not give you a clean picture.
- when switching colors, sc as normal, pull up 2 loops then pull through with the new color.
- Using bobins will help to keep your work neater and less tangled.
The Chart graph:
Ch 17 and follow graph.
The rows are labeled 1-16 on both sides.
After you are finished with the graph, weave in all the ends. Make 18 heart squares.
Joining:
This is the fun part! Arrange the squares the way you would like them and sc through the back loop and the first loop of the squares you are joining together. Continue to sc across in this manner and fasten off.
Sc across, attaching the next 3 squares in the same way and the following 3 squares in the same now.
Now repeat the same method attaching the squares down vertically. When you have done both sides, place the sides together (doesn’t matter what side is facing out as they should look the same on either side) and sc together through both loops around the bag.
Don’t fasten off, continue with the handles.
Handles:
Row 1: Sc in next 5 sts, ch 50, skip 28 sts, sc in next 10 sts, ch 50, skip 32 sts, hdc next 5 sts. Sl st to join, ch 1.
Row 2: Sc in each st around, sl st to join, ch 1.
Row 3: Sc in each st around, sl st to join, ch 1.
Row 4: Sc in each st around, sl st to join, ch 1.
Row 5: Sc in each st around, sl st to join. Fasten off, weave in end.
Optional: For a pop of color you can add a row of sc’s on the inside of the handles with a contrasting color and another row of sc’s on the top of the handles with a contrasting color.
Pin it for later!
This is lovely.
Thanks so much!
