I used D rings (easy to find at any craft store) and a detachable purse strap (I love thrifted ones!). The finished bag measures 11″ x 11″.

Crochet Puff Flower Crossbody Bag

Materials

Crochet hooks: E (3.5 mm) and G (4.0 mm)
100% cotton yarn (medium weight); I used Lily Sugar’n Cream, 2 – 4 oz balls
12″ zipper
Awl or sharp needle (for making holes in the zipper)
Threading floss in a matching color
Scissors
Blunt needle & sewing needle
Button
D rings
Detachable purse strap

Abbreviations / Special Stitches

ch – chain(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
tr – treble crochet

Puff Stitch:
Yarn over, insert hook in stitch and pull up a loop, yarn over and insert hook again pulling up another loop, yarn over and insert hook a third time and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through all loops on hook.

Bag Body

Prepare the zipper: Poke 38 holes along each side of the zipper. Using the E hook, draw up a loop and sc into each hole as you go. Don’t crochet too tightly, or the zipper may look wavy. Press lightly with an iron to keep flat. Work each side separately.
Switch to G hook.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn (38).
Row 2: Ch 3, puff in first st, ch 1, puff in same st, ch 1, skip next 2 sts; repeat across, turn (38).
Row 3: Ch 3, puff between the 2 puffs of previous row, ch 1, puff again in same space, ch 1; repeat across, ending with a puff in ch-3 space, turn (38).

Repeat Row 3 for 18 more rows. Fasten off. Repeat for the other side of the zipper.

Finishing:

Turn bag inside out and sc around the outer edge, leaving the zipper slightly open.
Fasten off. Turn bag right side out.
Fold extra zipper flaps and sew down with threading floss for a neat finish.

Flower & Petals

Flower:

Ch 5, sl st to first ch to form ring, ch 1.
Sc 12 times into ring (change color if desired).
Ch 4, puff in first st, puff in next st, ch 2, sl st in next st, ch 3; repeat around.
Sl st to first st to join. Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew.

Petals:

Ch 8. Sc in first st, hdc in next, dc in next, tr in next, dc in next, hdc in next, sc in last st.
Repeat down the other side, sl st to first st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew.

Sew flower, petals, and button onto the front of the bag.
