Create this cute crochet scrap yarn rug!
Wonder what to do with your leftover odds and ends of cotton yarn? Try this easy crochet scrap yarn rug! I noticed my rug for my sliding glass door was looking rather sad and decided it was time to replace it!
What better way than make something myself that would be vibrant and colorful for the season! I used various colors of leftover scrap cotton yarn and just added a new color when I ran out of one.
It is so easy to work up, this is a great project to do in front of the TV that you don’t have to think much about.
Great for a beginner!

Abbreviations:
ch= chain
sc= single crochet
hk= hook
st= stitch
Materials:
Cotton- I used Lilly’s Sugar N’ Cream and other scrap cotton I had. I would estimate it would take about 20 2 oz. balls, about 40 oz. total.
This is a rough estimate as I used my scrap yarn and did not measure everything out.
Hook size: I used 7 mm, a larger hook works nicely
Gauge: 8 sc = 3 inches
Final project size: 22 X 32 inches (you can make the rug larger or smaller by adding more or less chains at the beginning. This is a nice size for a doorway.
TIP: When you add a new color, sc over the loose threads so you don’t have to weave them in later.
Pattern:
Holding 2 strands of yarn together, Ch 54
Row 1: Sc in second ch from the hk each st to end, turn (53).
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across (53).
Repeat until piece measures 32″. Fasten off, weave in end.
Optional: You can add fringe to the ends by cutting two long 8″ strands and folding in half. Pull up a loop in each sc space and pull all the strands through. Repeat along each horizontal side. Trim to desired length.
You’re done!
Really like this. May start one today. Thank you!
Thank you! It’s a fun project and feels so good to use up your scrap yarn 🙂
I have a collection of stripey knitted blankets that I made from all my scrap yarn, but I never thought of making a scrap RUG. This is great! I pinned it and will put it in my queue (currently looking for projects to start when my youngest heads to kindergarten in the fall). Thank you for this excellent pattern! 🙂
You’re welcome! It’s a fun project to do with leftover cotton 🙂 My son will also be in Kindergarten in the Fall 🙂
