Surface Crochet Beanie Hat

This surface crochet beanie hat had lots of fun colors and detail and is really easy to make!

All you need to know is how to change colors, slip stitch surface crochet (very easy, there’s tons of tutorials and youtube videos on this!) and double crochet.

Find the matching scarf pattern HERE.

Be sure to check my my surface crochet headband and surface crochet fingerless mitten patterns!

medium worsted weight yarn (3 colors)

Darning needle

The Pattern:

With color A (main color) Ch 63, sl st into the first ch.

Row 1: Ch 2, dc in next st, *ch 1, sk next st, dc next 2 sts,* repeat from * to end, ending with ch 1 (63).

Row 2: Ch 2, dc in next st, *ch 1, sk next st, dc next 2 sts,* repeat from * to end, ending with ch 1 (63).

Row 3: Repeat row 2.

Row 4: Change to color B, repeat row 2.

Row 5: Change to color C, repeat row 2.

Continue repeating row 2 with color A for the next 3 rows, color B for the next row and color C for the next.

Repeat with this color pattern until piece measures 7.5 inches, ending with 3 rows of color A.

Sl st rows: Start a sl st at the first open space and loosely sl st yarn drawing up a lp from the bottom of the hat and sl stitching in a straight line down in each open space.

It will look like this:

Fasten off and weave in tails with a blunt needle. If you are having trouble there are tons of videos on Youtube that show how to surface crochet slip stitch.

Complete each row of open spaces alternating colors and weave in ends.

Take your blunt needle, cut a long piece of color A yarn and weave back and fourth around the top of the hat.

Pull together (the hat will scrunch at the top) and tie off on the inside. Secure any open spaces by adding more knots and fasten off. Weave in ends.

Pull up a lp on the bottom with color C, ch 2 and dc in the single lp around the bottom of the hat, sl to to join and change to color B.

Dc around (in both loops), sl st to join and change to color A. Ch 2 and dc around, sl st to join. Ch 1, sl st round and fasten off. Weave in end.

You’re one!
