Crochet Cherry Tote Bage

Crochet Cherry Tote Bag

If you have every been to Traverse City, Michigan then you know the Cherry Festival is a big deal! Cherry pie, cherry salsa, cherry jam and lots of cherry themed clothes!

I wanted to design a cute cherry tote bag that will be great to wear all Summer! Just follow the simple chart with the single crochet stitch, sew together and add on the handles.

The bag measures approx. 15″ wide by 14″ tall with a 9″ strap drop.

The free pattern is below.

  • Lilys Sugar N’ Cream 2 oz. 100% cotton yarn in ivory (4 skeins), red (1 skein) and green (1 skein)
  • Hook size G
  • Blunt needle

sc- single crochet

sl st- slip stitch

st(s)- stitch (es)

Chart graph- front of bag:

Complete the chart exactly as shown. Work from bottom to top (you may work from top to bottom, I just wrote the pattern so you can continue to work the handles in once you get to the top without cutting the yarn).

Chart graph tips:

  • always bring the yarn you are not using to the front. (for example, when you are switching from ivory to red, bring the ivory strand to the front and continue with the red, do not sc over the ivory or it will bleed through and not give you a clean picture.
  • when switching colors, sc as normal, pull up 2 loops then pull through with the new color.
  • Using bobins will help to keep your work neater and less tangled.

The Chart graph: Ch 51 and follow graph.

Cherry Graph Chart

The rows are labeled 1-50 on both sides.

After you are finished with the graph, weave in all the ends. I know there are a lot of ends to weave in but it will be worth it!

Back of bag:

Ch 51

Row 1: Sc in second ch from the hook and each st across.

Rows 2-50: Sc in each st across. Don’t fasten off, continue to sew together.

Sewing together:

Place the cherry piece down with the right side facing up. Place the other plain piece underneath. Put hook back in the loop from the plain side and sc trough both loops around 3 sides with 2 sc in each corner. Do not fasten off. Ch 2, continue with handles. My cherry is facing the opposite way because I flipped it over then sewed it together. Pick which ever way you like best!

Row 1: Sc in next 7 sts, ch 50, skip 35 sts, sc in next 14 sts, ch 50, skip 35 sts, hdc next 7 sts. Sl st to join, ch 1.

Row 2: Sc in each st around, sl st to join, ch 1 with red color.

Row 3: Sc in each st around, sl st to join, ch 1 with ivory color.

Row 4: Sc in each st around, sl st to join, ch 1.

Row 5: Sc in each st around, sl st to join. Fasten off, weave in end.

You’re done! Don’t forgot to save to your Pinterest boards!

  1. The instructions say “The rows are labeled 1-50 on both sides” but the instructions for the back refer to rows 2 through 49, not 2 through 50. Are there 49 or 50 rows on the back?

I have the front finished and it came out very nice. Thanks for the pattern.
