Ear Flaps:

Count over 15 sts from the back seam where you just fastened off. Draw up a lp and ch 1. Sc next 10 sts.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc next 6 sts, sc2tog, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc next 8 sts, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc next 4 sts, sc2tog, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc next 6 sts.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc next 4 sts, sc2tog, turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, sc next 4 sts.

Fasten off 1 earflap. Lay the hat flat with the earflap facing you, turn over and pick up a lp on the opposite side of the hat where the end of the earflap is. Ch 1, sc next 10 sts and repeat rows 1-6 of the earflap. Don’t fasten off, sc around the entire hat with 2sc in each corner of the earflaps. Fasten off and weave in end.

Weave in all ends on the inside of the hat. It may be tempting to crochet over the ends with all the color changes but you must weave in the ends so you don’t have any yarn tails poking out.

Side Braids:

Holding all 4 colors together, cut 6, 40″ strands of yarn. Fold in half, insert hook in the enter of the base of the earflap and grab the center of the yarn strands with your hook. Pull through and yarn over all straps through the loop. You may need to use a larger hook to get all the yarn strands though the base of the earflap, then I just pull the yarn through with my hand. Now divide into 3 sections and braid down. At the base you will knot and pull tightly to secure. Trim ends. Repeat on other side.

You’re done! Great job! I would love to see your color combinations! Please share with me on Facebook

    • The hat measures 7″ across the top (4th row) and 8 inches across the middle. The length including the earflaps measures 10″. This would fit ages 3-5 I’d say. My son wore this at 3 and it fits him now (he’s 4), I’m sure it will fit him another year. Hope this helps!
